New Environmental Noise Calculation Software Version

altA powerful and intuitive software for environmental noise calculation has become available with Brüel & Kjær’s (UK) Predictor-LimA Type 7810, with more applications than ever thanks to the release of the ninth version.

Predictor-LimA maps environmental noise using coloured contours that can be overlaid on 3D models, photographic images, or online maps, making it easy for non-experts to understand.

The new software has improved functionality and workflow support to make environmental noise mapping much simpler. It’s suitable for modelling shooting ranges due to 3D source directivity, which is necessary for modelling supersonic sources.

New Early Flood Warning Systems

altFlooding, both predicted and sudden, has become an increasingly common phenomenon in recent years. Many suffering localities have been un- or under-prepared, with little reason to believe they were at risk until it was too late. A reliable and cost-effective advance warning system that continuously monitors rivers, storm drains and overflows for rising water levels can save lives and protect property, alerting authorities and communities to impending danger.

The SonicSens 2 battery-powered ultrasonic level and flow sensor, from specialist manufacturer HWM (UK), offers non-contact, accurate, remote and wireless monitoring of water levels and flow rates. The ultrasonic sensor precisely measures the distance to (and therefore level of) the water surface, and can automatically send alerts to up to 16 phone numbers when the level reaches specified thresholds. When an alarm condition activates, it can also provide accelerated dial-in functionality, allowing users to quickly access detailed, relevant and timely new information when they have to.

Noise pollution has increased due to the 'wrong kind of wind'

altNoise pollution complaints have risen more than 900 per cent in South West London, as the level of noise from Heathrow Airport has increased exponentially.

Although it was first believed that the increase in noise was down to both runways running simultaneously, it is now believed that a change in weather has caused the amplification of noise.

Some have reported that the noise is being carried over South West London when it was not previously.

New Digital Controllers for General Application

altWIKA (Germany) has now completed its portfolio of temperature controllers with two digital instruments for simple thermostat applications: The model SC58 and model SC64 close the gaps in this segment between mechanical products and complex PID instruments.

The new digital controllers are designed for a measuring range of -80 to +400 °C, and can therefore be used universally. The switch hysteresis can be set via the menu, which assists the flexibility. Both two-point controllers are equally notable for their high switching accuracy and contact rating (16 A). They are easy to use and offer a highly-visible display (13 mm high characters).

Safe Determination of Halogens, Phosphorus & Sulphur

altThe Model OFCU-1 from Exeter Analytical (UK) provides a highly safe tool for preparing samples for elemental analysis of Halogens, Phosphorus and Sulphur using the Oxygen Flask Combustion procedure.

The oxygen flask combustion procedure is provided as the preparatory step in the determination of bromine, chlorine, fluorine, iodine, phosphorus and sulphur in some Pharmacopeial articles. Combustion of the material under test (usually organic) yields water-soluble inorganic products, which may be analysed for specific elements as directed in the individual Pharmacopeia monograph or general chapter. The oxygen flask combustion procedure using the attractively priced OFCU-1 is capable of being used for repeatable determination of elemental composition from percentage levels to parts per million.

Sierra Announces New Thermal Dispersion Technology

altSierra Instruments today introduces their new QuadraTherm™ 640i / 780i Thermal Mass Flow Meter Series, marking a disruptive breakthrough in thermal dispersion technology. With its sensor design advancements, coupled with a proprietary iTherm “Brain”, the 780i inline version achieves gas mass flow rate measurement accuracy of +/- 0.5% of reading above 50% of the full scale (Air) making it the most accurate thermal meter in the industry. Before today, this level of accuracy was never thought possible with thermal dispersion mass flow meters.

At the heart of the 640i / 780i is its revolutionary patented QuadraTherm sensor and proprietary iTherm™ algorithm set. Traditional thermal sensors have two sensors–one temperature sensor and one velocity sensor, each in a separate probe. QuadraTherm introduces four sensors—three precision platinum temperature sensors and one patented no-drift DrySense™ mass velocity sensor, which is backed by a lifetime warranty and uses a proprietary manufacturing process to greatly improve accuracy and long-term stability.

Hydra IIC Mercury Analyser – No Hassle Mercury Analysis

altTeledyne Leeman Labs (USA) Hydra IIC Mercury Analyser eliminates the complicated chemistry and hazardous waste associated with conventional mercury techniques. The Hydra IIC is a fully automated turnkey analyser that measures mercury in solid and semi-solid sample matrices directly without any acid digestion (sample preparation).

The system employs the technique of sample combustion (thermal decomposition), mercury concentration via gold amalgamation and detection by cold vapour atomic absorption. The biggest advantage of the Hydra IIC is that no sample preparation is required before analysis.
