Geography at Northumbria University encompasses all of our work in social and cultural geography, physical geography and environmental science, crime, environmental health and management, health & safety, and disaster management.
The department progressively develops new knowledge, expertise and partnerships to address the major challenges of our times. Our research and teaching is focused on providing the means to address future climate change, poverty, disaster risk, biodiversity conservation, health and safety, crime and pollution. All Geography and Environmental Management related degree courses consistently achieve 90%+ for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey. This is testament to our staff and a department which has a strong and rich tradition of developing innovative approaches to learning, teaching and assessment, including research-informed teaching and extensive application of practical field and lab-based activities.
The department is highly integrated with professional practice and policy makers, ranging from local, regional and national Government, international private sector, the UN, EU and varied communities around the world, and has strong roots in the local economies and cultures of the North East of England. This enables opportunities for student placements and dissertations. Our environmental science and environmental health courses are also professionally accredited, strengthening our links to the workplace.
Our staff undertake world-leading research in cold and paleo environments, disasters, risk and resilience, social and cultural geography, environmental geochemistry and ecology, with projects and engagement taking place in more than 30 countries, from Antarctica, to the tropics and the Canadian arctic. We also work in research partnerships with leading academic institutions in the UK and globally.
