We are a leading centre for scholarship in geography and sustainable development, with highly ranked undergraduate and postgraduate courses which equip students to be problem-solvers in a complex world. Our overarching aim is to integrate the study of the earth system with its landscapes, peoples, places and environments. We teach and research across the full breadth of geography, and also bring together expertise in the social and natural sciences to explore the principles and practice of sustainable development. The importance of understanding environmental change is a strong thread running through all our programmes, and, very practically, St Andrews is on track to become the UK’s first carbon-neutral university following the opening of its £25 million biomass heating plant in 2016.

The School is consistently ranked amongst the best in the UK, and we attract students from around the world, drawn here by our long-standing reputation for excellent teaching in a world-class intellectual environment. Our excellent skills training, underpinned by a suite of state-of-the-art analytical and field facilities, contributes to our strong employability record. In the most recent UK Research Excellence Framework assessment (2014), we came top in Scotland, and the 2017 Times & Sunday Times University Guide ranked us 4th in the UK. The School’s world-leading expertise in environmental economics is a particular strength.

At undergraduate level, we offer degrees in Geography (MA and BSc) and Sustainable Development (MA and BSc). Our programmes are driven by the research interests, passions and expertise of our staff who create a challenging and exciting learning environment for highly qualified students. We also have a lively and expanding community of taught postgraduates (MSc/MRes) and PhD students from around the world, and we retain close links with our alumni. Our teaching is enhanced through close collaboration with the other Schools across the university, especially in the context of our innovative, inter-disciplinary programmes in Sustainable Development.
