A day in the life of an Environmental Health Officer

I’m Christine Morrison, a Scots Gaelic speaker from the Outer Hebrides. I wasn’t really aware of Environmental Health as a career when I was in school. However, once I started working in an environmental health department, I became interested in the wide and varied range of work. 

After completing my BSc in Applied Food Science and Marketing I went on to complete an MSc in Human Nutrition and Metabolism. I then started my career in Environmental Health in 1992 as a Food Safety Officer.

UDOL positioned to develop 'Future Fit' environmental management professionals

In 2014, The Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) published “Skills for a Sustainable Economy: Preparing for the Perfect Storm” identifying the key environmental risks and challenges affecting businesses and the role of skilled environmental management and sustainability professionals in helping organisations adapt to the sustainability challenge. This report was updated in a 2016 publication which identified leadership, value chain, collaboration, innovation, systems thinking, long-term view, strategy, influence, procurement and review among others as ingredients needed by organisations to successfully transform to sustainability.

ALS Environmental supports sustainability

The Carbon Steering Team at ALS Environmental are a group of individuals who are committed to reducing the carbon footprint of their business and finding ways of supporting sustainability. Recently the team had a 6 year review and were proud to report the success that has been achieved. ALS has remarkably reduced the Total Carbon Footprint of the company by almost a third over the past six years.

In 2011 the Carbon Steering Team was created with the objective of promoting the efficient use of fuels; namely gas, electricity and diesel. All of the sites under review have dramatically reduced their carbon usage, most significantly in gas and electricity, for this period and there are plans in place to make further efficiency savings. The 2017/2018 objective was to decrease the Carbon footprint by 5-10%. For the first 5 months alone it has actually dropped by approximately 9% so they are well within target.

Sustainable building design exemplifies city regeneration

In November, Eight Artillery Row was presented with the BDA Chairman’s Award at the 2015 Brick Awards.

Designed by Make Architects for clients Victoria Property Holdings and LBS Properties, this competition winning design proposed the refurbishment and extension of an existing 1980s office building in Victoria to provide twenty two private residential apartments over eight levels, plus ground floor retail space.
